The Vice President of Argentina, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, escaped death after an assassination attempt by an assailant who pointed a gun at her on Thursday night, September 1, at close range, but it failed to fire.
The incident occurred as de Kirchner was encompassed by supporters as she returned home after spending a day in court, where she is facing corruption accusations damming from the time she served as president of Argentina from 2007-15. She proved innocent of all the charges she was labeled with.
According to the video footage, it captured the moment the assailant appeared from a crowd of supporters outside Cristina Fernández’s house, holding the pistol just a few meters away from her head. She flickers and blenches as the would-be assassin presses the trigger, and numerous onlookers gush forward as the gun appears to jam.
In a national address made on television by the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, he said:
“A man pointed a firearm at her head and pulled the trigger.”
The president went ahead by saying:
“ the assassination attempt was the most serious incident since we recovered democracy” in 1983.
“We can disagree, we can have deep disagreements, but hate speech cannot take place because it breeds violence and there is no chance of violence coexisting with democracy,”.
The gunman has been apprehended by the authorities but has not unveiled his identity.
