The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has ‘conditionally’ suspended its eight-month-old industrial action.
After the National Executive Committee (NEC) marathon meeting which started on Thursday night to the early hours of Friday. ASUU’s NEC comprises the chairmen of the state chapters and members of the national executive reached a consensus to suspend the strike.
While confirming the news to journalists, members of the Committee said the committee will decide its next line of action, mainly on the Court of Appeal ruling last week.
However, the Appellate Court had adjudicated that the union can only appeal the judgment of the National Industrial Court ordering it to suspend its strike if it first calls off its eight-month-old industrial action.
In other words, Later today, a formal circular is anticipated to be issued by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The union is yet to release an official statement concerning the suspension of the strike.
The suspension of the strike is a result of the state branches’ determination to follow the court’s verdict and allow further talks with the federal government.
Recall that ASUU has been on strike since February 14 this year.
