Crayon would make the short trip to Festac, Nigeria’s ancient cultural capital, to get into studios where he would occasionally record songs. The circumstances were no better than at Ojo’s studios, but it provided a sense of camaraderie. He met producer Ozedikus (Rema’s “Dumebi ”) and musician Nos, the three of them working hard to build a creative partnership in conversation with the city’s best. Then, in July, one of Crayon’s earliest tracks, “Orobo Love,” received rare payment-free airplay from City FM, one of Lagos’ many urban radio stations. Crayon had street credibility, which was key to his mainstream breakthrough, with his buddies geeked out and Ojo Road hot with his name.
Who Is Crayon
Crayon’s full name is Charles Chibueze Chukwu, although he is more often known by his stage name, Crayon, which is pronounced: “Crayon.” He was born on July 8, 2000, in Orile, Iganmu, Lagos State, and would be 21 years old in 2020. He’s young, yes, but he has promised, much like Rema, Joeboy, Omay Lay, and so on. He was born into a household of two children, himself and his younger brother, followed by his parents, who all live in Iba, Lagos, after moving from Orile.
Crayon is from Ebonyi State, although he spent much of his childhood with Yoruba-speaking people from the Ojo village. His father had a CD rental store where he spent most of his time playing the music of his favorite singers such as Usher, Zule Zoo, 50 Cent, Wizkid, Fela, Drake, Justin Bieber, Bryson Tiller, and Davido. His mother was a successful entrepreneur.
Crayon was the youngster who would sing while doing his housework or taking a bath. His parents urged him to join the teen choir at his elementary school since they recognized his musical talent.
In 2016, he abandoned his quest for higher education after failing the JAMB UTME four times. His educational ambitions were dashed when he was denied entrance to a university to study Food and Nutrition. Despite the pressure and aggravation of not being able to attend university “like your friends,” he continued with his music career. In 2015, he was under emotional duress for approximately a year until a buddy intervened.

Clarence Peters directed the video, which was excellent. The video for the song has received over 400,000 views on YouTube. On May 31, 2019, Baby Fresh listened to one of those early tunes and quickly identified Crayon’s potential to become a force to reckon with in Afrobeats, signing him under the producer’s record label, Blowtime Entertainment, an imprint of Don Jazzy’s Mavins records.
“We are pleased to announce our new imprint deal with Baby Fresh’s Blowtime Entertainment as we unveil our new artist, Crayon,” Don Jazzy said. Baby Fresh has always been a part of the Mavin family, and we are looking forward to what is building up to be an incredible moment in his incredible career.
Crayon is an excellent musician and recording artist with a wide range of musical styles, and I am confident that we can achieve great things together.”
Crayon Record Label
Crayon had previously published seven songs with Ozedikus in his hometown before signing a record deal with Blowtime Entertainment and Mavin Record. When Baby Fresh first heard the song, one of the Mavin Records employees appreciated it and continued to play it in the office until he grew inquisitive about the artist and why he went by the moniker “Crayon.” Baby Fresh was also curious as to why the musician had picked that nickname. Crayon was invited by Babyfresh to attend the Mavin headquarters with his songs and producer, ‘Ozedikus.’ After the latter contacted the former over Instagram.
Blowtime Entertainment, a musical label, eventually signed him to a recording deal. Which is a Mavin Records label owned by Baby Fresh. His debut appearance was on Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records tune “All is in Order,” which also featured Korede Bello, Rema, and DNA. Crayon had a spectacular start.
