Unidentified criminal elements set fire to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, in Ogidi District, Anambra State, on Monday morning, leaving roughly 32 utility and operating trucks, as well as other assets and equipment, completely destroyed.
Mr. Emeka Ezeh, the EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, indicated in a press release issued today that the event occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 16th, 2022, at around 1.45 a.m.
Ezeh noted that attempts to contact the Anambra State Fire Service at the time to come and rescue the situation had failed, leaving members of staff on the ground helpless as they watched the office building and other assets burn.
“It took the involvement of the Honourable Commissioner for Utilities, Anambra State, Engr. Julius Chukwuemeka, at approximately 9.05 a.m. today to summon the Fire Service team down to the scene of the event,” he said.
The EEDC management expressed astonishment at this heinous incident, which occurs at a time when the firm has spent much to strengthen its operations and reshape the area’s socio-economic landscape.
“This is a significant setback for EEDC’s efforts to develop its network and improve the quality of service it provides to its consumers in Ogidi and Anambra State as a whole.”
“We have already alerted the appropriate authorities to this development, and it is expected that a thorough investigation will be conducted and the perpetrators of this heinous act prosecuted.””A developing economy like ours cannot progress if we continue to record incidents like this.”
The criminals attacked one of the security personnel at the office and caused many machete wounds on his head, leg, and arm as they demanded his gun, while his other colleagues bolted for their lives, according to reports. The victim is presently undergoing medical treatment.
“We thank God that no one was killed; we condemn this heinous act and pray that it never happens again.”
