Nigeria has the biggest entertainment industry in Africa, with its Afrobeat performers at the forefront.

Nigeria has established the norm and trend for pop culture in all of Africa.

Local performers that have become so well-known in both the local and international music scene, it has contributed to Afrobeats’ rise to one of the top music genres in the world.

Afrobeats may have originated in Ghana, but Nigerians are credited with popularizing the music.

Afrobeats dominates all other musical genres in the West African nation by a wide margin.

For years, the music scene in Lagos, the city of excellence, has produced Afrobeat music artists.

Other musicians in Nigeria, Africa, and the whole continent have drawn influence from Nigerian Afrobeat vocalists.

Speaking about Afrobeats musicians in Nigeria as a whole, the list is vast and includes superstars like Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Wizkid, and others who are creating waves throughout the world.

However, we will only highlight 10 of Nigeria’s top Afrobeat artists in this article.

1. Wizkid

Wizkid

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun known professionally as Wizkid is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He is one of the top Afrobeat singers and was born on July 16, 1990. He started recording his songs at age 11 and released a collaborative album with the Glorious Five (5), a group he and a couple of his church friends formed.

In 2009, Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment and Wizkid agreed to a record deal (E.M.E). The first hit off his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), which also produced the hits “Tease Me/Bad Guys” and “Don’t Dull,” “Holla at Your Boy,” brought him into the spotlight later.

He became popular after working with Drake on the smash song “One Dance”, which earned him the first Afrobeat musician to be included in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Wizkid was the most streamed artist on Spotify by February of this year, and he has since been breaking records.

2. Davido

2. Davido

David Adedeji Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, is another well-known figure in the local and global music scene birthed on 21 November 1992.

He became popular in 2012 after releasing “Duro” his second single from his studio debut Album Omo baba olowo.

He recorded many successful songs between 2013 and 2015, and in January 2016, he agreed to a record contract with Sony Music. He then established the record company Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), which has signed artists including Dremo, Mayorkun, Peruzzi, and Liya.

Davido has been dubbed the leader of current Afrobeats. He was listed by the new African magazine in 2019 as one of the top 100 most influential Africans.

He is the second-most followed African on Instagram as of August 2021.

3. Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage

Our “Koroba” and “Someone’s Son” crooner Tiwatope Savage professionally known as Tiwa Savage, AKA Africa’s bad girl, comes in third on the list.

Tiwatope Savage was born on February 5th, 1980. She moved from Isale Eko to London when she was 11 years old to pursue her secondary education. About 5 years later, she began dabbling in music, providing backup vocals for artists like Mary J. Blidge and George Michael.

Even though it was the UK version of the show, she took part in it and finished Berklee College of Music.
She entered into a publishing agreement with Sony/ATV music publishing in 2009. In 2012, after returning to Nigeria, she signed with the record company Mavins Record.

In 2014, Tiwa Savage was the first female Nigerian artist to be nominated for the BET awards. In the same year, she was also nominated for the MTV European music award which she later won In 2018.
Her music is a blend of pop, hip-hop, R&B, and of course Afrobeats.

4. Burna Boy

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu known professionally as Burna Boy was born on 2 July 1991 is one of the greatest and most successful vocalists in the music industry. He is a singer/rapper, songwriter, and record producer.

Since the year 2011 till the present, he has worked in the music industry.
He has collaborated with record companies such as Spaceships, Badhabit, Atlantic, Warner Music, and others.

After releasing “Like to Party,” the lead song off his debut studio album, L.I.F.E., in 2012, he became famous (2013). He performs songs in several different genres, including Afrobeat, dancehall, hip hop, pop, and R&B. He has collaborated with the likes of Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, Sauti Sol, Wizkid e.t.c.

5. Timaya

Timaya

Inetimi Timaya Odon, better known by his stage name Timaya was born on August 15, 1980. He is a native of Odi in the South-South Nigerian state of Bayelsa. In honor of his origins, to which he has given much back, he is affectionately referred to as the Egberi Papa 1 of Bayelsa.  He is also a signed artist to DM (Dem Mama) Records Limited, which he founded.

“Dem Mama,” which was included on his first album, True Story, which was released the following year, marked the beginning of his solo career in 2005. Gift and Grace, his second album, was released in 2008. Through the release of his third studio album, De Rebirth, in collaboration with Black Body Entertainment, and its lead track, “Plantain Boy,” he increased his exposure and worldwide notoriety.

Timaya released Upgrade in 2012, and it gave rise to the singles “Bum Bum,” “Sexy Ladies,” and “Malonogede”. He has received several prestigious honors and accolades for his work to date, including four Headies Awards, two AFRIMMA Awards, a Nigeria Music Award, and an NEA Award.

6. Mr Eazi

Mr. Eazi

Oluwatosin Ajibade, best known by his stage name Mr Eazi, was born in Nigeria and currently resides in Ghana. He is considered the father of Banku music, which combines Ghanaian highlife with Nigerian chord progressions and patterns. In 2008, Mr. Eazi moved to Kumasi, Ghana, and enrolled at KNUST. He then started hiring musicians to play at college events.

After recording a guest verse for the song “My Life,” which gathered momentum and became a hit at KNUST, he began to express an interest in music. In 2013, Mr Eazi released his first mixtape, “About to Blow”. After the track “Skin Tight,” featuring Efya, was released, he attracted a large worldwide following. In 2017, he released his second mixtape, Life Is Eazi, Vol. 1 – Accra To Lagos.

7. Patoranking

Patoranking

Nigerian reggae-dancehall musician Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie, best known by his stage name Patoranking, was born on May 27, 1990. Patoranking is an Ebonyi State native who was born and raised in Ijegun-Egba Satellite Town.

In 2010, he secured a record contract with K-Igberaga Solo’s Records, whose label he used to release “Up in D Club.” Following their collaboration on Timaya’s song “Alubarika,” Patoranking was accepted as a protégé by Dem Mama Records.

He obtained a record contract with Foston Musik in February 2014 and released the single “Girlie O,” which propelled him to fame. Patoranking revealed on Instagram on February 9 that he has struck a distribution agreement with VP Records. In advance of the release of his album later in 2020, Patoranking released a song named Abule on September 28. In 2020, he said that when playing football, he once had inspiration for a song on a football field.

8. Olamide

Olamide

Rapper and musician Olamide Gbenga Adedeji who is professionally known as Olamide was born in Nigeria on March 15, 1989. He is among the most well-known and prominent African musicians. He keeps both Yoruba and English records.

While contracted to Coded Tunes, he released his first studio album “Rapsodi” in 2011. His second album, YBNL, was published under the label imprint “Yahoo Boy No Laptop,” also known as YBNL Nation. The songs “First of All,” “Voice of the Street,” “Stupid Love,” and “Ilefo Illuminati” helped to support the album. He released his third studio album, Baddest Guy Ever Liveth, on November 7, 2013. Singles from the album include “Durosoke” and “Yemi My Lover.” Olamide became the first Nigerian to sign an endorsement contract with Cîroc on July 17, 2013.

9. Fireboy DML

Fireboy DML

Nigerian musician Adedamola Adefolahan, often known as Fireboy DML, was born on February 5, 1996. He is a member of the record label YBNL Nation, established by the Nigerian rapper Olamide. 2019 saw the release of his first studio album, Laughter, Tears, and Goosebumps.

At the 2020 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival, he received the award the Listener’s Choice Award and was nominated for Song of the Year for “Jealous.”

10. Rema

Rema

Divine Ikubor, better known by his stage name Rema, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, composer, and stage performer. He was born on May 1, 2000. With the debut of the song “Iron Man,” he became famous. He signed a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records in 2019. The music video for “Dumebi,” a standout track from his self-titled EP, was released on May 21 by Jonzing World and Mavin and features a cameo by Diana Eneje.

Rema earned Next Rated and was a Viewer’s Choice nominee at the 13th annual Headies on October 19, 2019.

He won the Soundcity MVP Award for a best new artist on January 12, 2020. Rema received a nomination for Best Viewers’ Choice: International Act at the 2020 BET Awards on June 15, 2020. As the only Nigerian artist nominated for the awards edition of 2020, he was nominated with Burna Boy and Wizkid.
