A settlement that will address charges alleging Volkswagen AG and its Porsche AG business falsified pollution and fuel efficiency statistics on 500,000 Porsche cars sold in the U.s. has been given final clearance by a court in the United States. The deal will have a value of approximately $80 million.

The settlement applies to Porsche automobiles with model years ranging from 2005 all the way up to 2020. It was reported earlier by Reuters in June. The purchasers of these automobiles have sued the automaker for deliberately modifying test cars in order to influence the results of tests evaluating pollutants and fuel efficiency.

On November 9, 2018, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer granted approval for $24.5 million in legal fees and expenses. On the same day, Breyer ordered that owners of qualifying automobiles get compensation ranging from $250 to $1,109 for each car.

Porsche has published a statement in which it says it is “working to create a solution and to guarantee consumers are fairly reimbursed.”

it added.

“We are committed to providing our customers with transparent fuel economy and emissions data, and the agreement ensures that customers are fairly reimbursed for any fuel economy changes,”

Volkswagen came under further investigation when the German carmaker revealed in 2015 that it had violated pollution regulations in almost 11 million diesel engines throughout the globe by using specialized technology to circumvent the regulations.

After then, the corporation paid more than $20 billion to resolve the civil and criminal proceedings brought about in the United States as a result of the fraud case. In 2017, the car manufacturer entered a plea of guilty regarding fraud charges, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements.

As part of the agreement, shareholders of Porsche automobiles equipped with a driving mode called “Sport+” who surpassed pollution limits while operating their automobiles in that mode will receive an extra $250 if they accomplish emission control repair software upgrades that will decrease the amount of carbon output their vehicles produce.
