Divine Ikubor, a prominent singer and composer from Nigeria who was born on May 1, 2000, is one of a select group of musicians that are said to represent the Afrobeats genre’s future. Rema is the stage name of the musician and founder of the Afrorave subgenre.

His ascent to fame began after he was signed to Jonzing World, a division of Mavin Records, by A&R and talent manager D’Prince. Following the release of his self-titled album, Rema, which included big singles like Dumebi and Iron Man, Rema established himself as a major force in the music business.

The latter song ended up on former US President Barack Obama’s summer playlist. 2019’s The Headies saw him take home the prestigious Next Rated Artist honor.

Adaptable musical Rema, a 22-year-old Nigerian rapper, composer, and performer, is the stage name of Divine Ikubor.

Rema, who was raised in a Christian household and was born in the year 2000 in Benin, Edo State, shot to popularity with the blockbuster hit “Dumebi” released by Jonzing World, owned by D’Prince and a label under Mavin Records, which is at the top of the charts in the majority of African nations.

Early Life

On May 1, 2000, Rema was welcomed into the Ikubor family. His parents gave him the name Divine eight days after his birth, on Worker’s Day. He is the family’s first male kid and firstborn.

The son of Justice Ikubor is Rema. His political rivals are said to have assassinated his father, Justice Ikubor, in a hotel room.

He was reared in Benin City, a city in the South-South. He is an Edo State native. He lived in a multicultural neighborhood, but his parents instilled in him a strong Christian religion. This meant that he spent his Sundays worshiping God in his neighborhood church.

Education

Rema received his elementary and high school education at prestigious privately run institutions while staying in Benin City. He attended Ighile Group Of Schools in Edo State, where he received his Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE).

He was granted admission to the famous University Of Lagos in 2021 to pursue a degree in creative arts.

Career

Rema did not immediately start his college studies after receiving his high school degree. While he was waiting for luck to smile on him, he improved as a musician and perfected his sound.

After posting a freestyle video of D’Prince’s song Gucci Gang on Instagram in 2018, he received the answer to his prayers. D’Prince, who was enamored by Rema’s skill, saw the video when it went popular on the social media app and became interested in it.

After that, D’Prince who is both an A&R and a talent manager got in touch with Rema and started developing the young performer. He signed Rema to Mavin Records’ subsidiary Jonzing World in 2019.

Rema released his first effort, an EP named Rema, months after joining the Mavin Family. Iron Man, Corn, Why, and Dumebi are the four songs that make up the EP’s four tracks. The EP quickly climbed to the top spot on Apple Music Nigeria following its release. The two most popular singles from the album are Dumebi and Iron Man.

To the joy of Rema’s expanding fan base, the music video for Dumebi was released on May 21. The video has received more than 50 million views on YouTube since its premiere. Ademola Falomo is the director and photographer of the video.

Rema did not wait for the excitement around the success of his first EP to die down before releasing his follow-up effort, also in 2019, named Bad Commando. Songs like Bad Commando, Rewind, Boulevard, American Love, and Spiderman are included in the EP. Rema’s renown soared thanks to this second endeavor, which brought him, new admirers, both domestically and abroad.

With hits like Beamer (Bad Boys), Woman, Rainbow, Fame, Ginger Me, Peace Of Mind, and Alien in 2020, he completely overtook the music world. So, when he was nominated for the Best Viewers’ Choice: International Act award at the 2020 BET Awards, it wasn’t a surprise to music fans. In the category, he was the third Nigerian behind Wizkid and Burna Boy.

Rema had a successful year in 2021, releasing a few songs that were hit, working with other musicians, touring the country, and finishing his debut album. In 2021, he released songs with names like Soundgasm, Bounce, and 44.

Rema, a musician, began his career while still a student in high school. Together with Alpha P, he co-founded the musical ensemble RnA, which was an inventive combination of the initial letters of their musical names. Rema and Alpha P’s group, RnA, went on to win the second season of Pikolo’s Dream Alive Talent Show and also inked a contract with Peak Entertainment.

Under the aegis of Peak Entertainment, they released the song “Mercy,” which was created in the Dream Alive Studio in Benin, Edo State. Whyte House Pictures produced a music video to accompany the track “Mercy.” In order to increase their visibility, Rema played at the Glo Slide and Bounce Concert when they were still a combined group with Alpha P.
