Anambra State enters a new era today, with the democratically elected governor, prof. Charles Soludo, taking over the governorship from Willie Obiano, who has successfully ruled the state for the past eight years under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Chukwuma Soludo of the APGA was declared the winner of the November 6 governorship election in the State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Andy Uba, a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC), finished third with 43,285 votes.

With 21,261 votes, Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive Party (YPP) placed fourth. Mr Ubah, like Mr Ozigbo, won in one local government, while Mr Soludo won in the remaining 19 local governments.

Here are five major facts about the governor-elect to be aware of.

  • Aguata Born Soludo is from Isuanioma, Anambra State, which is part of the Aguata Local Government Area.

Soludo, who was born on July 28, 1960, lost his mother when he was a young child. The young lad, however, did not let his mother’s death deter him from excelling in his studies, and his aptitude for academics would eventually see him do his mother’s memory proud a few years after her death.

In keeping with his brilliance, Soludo graduated with First Class Honours in 1984, an MSc in Economics in 1987, and a PhD in 1989, winning awards for being the best student at all three levels. He earned three degrees and a professorship at the University of Nigeria in Nsukka, Enugu State.

  • Outstanding educator

Soludo was a visiting professor at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA, by 1999, and a lecturer at Oxford, Cambridge, and Warwick University. He has also served as a visiting scholar at the IMF and the Brookings Institution.

The economist from Aguata has served as a consultant for a number of international organizations, including The World Bank, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and the United Nations Development Programme.

Professor Soludo has written and co-written a number of books, the majority of which focus on multi-country macro-econometric modeling, techniques of computable general equilibrium modeling, survey methodology, and panel data econometrics, among other topics.

Professor Soludo was appointed Chief Economic Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria’s National Planning Commission in 2003, based on his wealth of knowledge. He was appointed governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and chairman of its board of directors in May 2004. (CBN).

Professor Soludo is credited with refocusing the CBN as an effective monetary authority, successfully implementing a fundamental restructuring that is said to have resulted in an unprecedented consolidation of the Nigerian banking system during his tenure as CBN Governor.

According to a statement on the CBN’s official page, Soludo advocated for the creation of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), a continental, private-sector-driven investment bank.

Soludo was appointed by President Mohammadu Buhari to the newly formed eight-member Economic Advisory Council (EAC) on September 16, 2019, as a result of his excellent performance as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

  • Unwavering Politician

When the economics professor declared his intention to run for governor of Anambra State in 2009, he was chosen as the People’s Democratic Party’s consensus candidate (PDP).

He lost the gubernatorial election to Peter Obi. On July 17, 2013, Soludo resigned from the PDP and joined the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in preparation for the governorship election in Anambra state in November 2013.

However, in mid-August 2013, he was disqualified by the APGA Screening Committee, along with five other qualified aspirants.

Soludo would declare his intention to run for Governor on the APGA platform once more, and this time, after a contentious legal battle, the former CBN governor was officially declared the candidate of the state’s ruling party.

  • Sixth-generation Father

In recent years, there hasn’t been much attention paid to Soludo’s personal life; however, the professor is married to Mrs Nonye Soludo, and the couple has six children.

Soludo first declared himself a Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in 2009.
