Kelvin Ezeoha, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Leader in Enugu State, and one other person were slain by gunmen on Tuesday.
The gunmen are said to have stormed a meeting of members of the party’s Ward 3 Obeagu Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government chapter, and abducted another individual whose name is yet unknown.
The conference was being conducted to reconcile members of the party’s two sections when gun-wielding individuals invaded the room, murdering two party members instantaneously and whisking away one other person, according to The Punch.
For years, the APC’s Enugu State branch has been in turmoil over the party’s leadership.
All prospects of resolving the conflict during the ward, local, and state congresses, however, were dashed when two opposing leaderships emerged at the conclusion of the exercise.
While Ugochukwu Agbala, a former State Commissioner for Works, was elected chairman of the faction led by Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adolphus Ude was elected factional chairman of the group led by Dr Ben Nwoye, former Chairman.
“Some gunmen raided the Enugu South LGA APC meeting on Tuesday evening when their meeting was in process and opened fire on the party members,” a party chieftain, Mr Sunday Olinya, stated.
“They assassinated the party’s immediate past Enugu South Local Government Chairman, Mr. Kelvin Ezeoha, who is now the state youth leader, and one other person, while a party member was abducted.”
Attempts to talk with the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, about the matter were fruitless, according to The Punch, since he did not pick up his phone calls.
