On July 15, 2000, His Excellency, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and currently the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, established the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA); to assist and preserve order in the state.
Aim and obligation LASTMA
Here are the aims and obligations of establishing Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)
- To regulate, manage, and control traffic-related issues in the city of Lagos.
- Public education and awareness-raising for safety highway usage for drivers and motorists.
- Transportation Security and Incident Handling.
- To help perform research on the safety and behavior of drivers.
Let’s now discuss the news of the day.
Currently, the agency’s chief Mr. Olalekan Bakare Oki, has stated in public that filmmakers and skit creators had to abstain from using the LASTMA outfit without authorization.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, or LASTMA, has issued a warning, stating that anyone found taking advantage of the agency’s uniform or any associated colors or going about without official government authorization will face legal consequences.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the agency’s general manager, made this statement on Thursday (15th February 2024) after seeing two actors wearing fake LASTMA uniforms in a social media video that went viral and showed one of them being brought back to life a white “Sienna” Space bus was impounded on the road.
Bakare-Oki expressed disapproval for the dehumanizing way in which filmmakers exploit the LASTMA institution to represent themselves in their works, even going so far as to wear the agency’s uniform without following Section 79 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Law, which makes such unapproved use illegal.
“Film or skit makers who portray as LASTMA officers without applying for, and being duly issued a permit letter for such portrayals, to desist with immediate effect or face the full wrath of the Law,” stated the LASTMA head.
According to him, sanity in the making of movies and restrictions on the ownership and use of LASTMA outfits would undoubtedly stop the agency’s uniforms from spreading across our society.
“He has humbly requested that the National Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTA) and other related organizations alert their members to the fact that anyone found in possession of a LASTMA uniform without a valid permit will face legal action under Section 79 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Law,”.
