Gunmen stormed the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) station in Awada, Onitsha, yesterday and brutalized some night-shift employees.

According to an eyewitness, the shooters set fire to a building, a corporate bus, and a parked car.

While no one was killed in the incident, the eyewitness stated that the shooters brutalized members of the staff they encountered on the grounds, causing varying degrees of injuries.

A witness at the site verified the attack, saying that the on-duty staff employees were viciously flogged and that two vehicles were set on fire.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the attack in a statement, saying no one was killed.

“Following a distress call today, May 30, 2022, at around 4:30 a.m., of a case of arson in Anambra Broadcasting Station, Idemili North, police operatives arrived promptly and prevented the hoodlums from causing damage to the facility,” the statement says in part.

“Unfortunately, two of the station’s operating vehicles were damaged.”

Meanwhile, he stated that the station has been sealed off and that the operation in the vicinity is still underway.

In a separate incident, gunmen killed an unnamed police officer and took his firearm on Sunday in Ogidi, Idemili North Council of the state.

According to a source, the gunmen set up shop outside Ogidi Town Hall, where several police officers regularly maintain a roadblock.

They waited for a long time, he added, until they noticed one of the cops and shot him.

“They took his AK 47 rifle from him before fleeing,” the person claimed.

Ikenga confirmed the event but denied that any police officers were killed.

He said that a gunfight broke out between police officers and several hoodlums, with one of the officers dying as a result of his injuries.

He said: “Information before me states that on May 29, 2022, at about 12:50 pm, police operatives, on observation patrol along Abatete expressway, Ogidi, engaged some armed hoodlums.

“Unfortunately, during the gun duel, one of the police operatives was fatally wounded and due to the superior fire of the police, the gunmen were made to flee the scene.”
